OFFICIAL 2022 BOYS ALL STATE AWARDS
Thoughts on Coos Bay…
This years state tournament definitely lived up to the hype! Even though I wasn’t present to watch the games live in person, I watched the game from online. Here are some of my key take away from this year Elite Eight Tournament.
Girls Side
3A Cinderella Team..
#16 OES had one of the greatest playoff runs of all time. Yes, I know there are some teams that has done it in the past and congrats to those teams as well. With that said, OES lead by LCL POY Cayton Smith was phenomenal this year. In the Sweet 16, OES traveled to undefeated #1 Willamina and shocked the state with a 65-58 win. Cayton scored 39 points in the victory! Next, OES traveled to Coos Bay and defeated a tough #9 Creswell team in the Elite Eight And advanced to the Final Four. In the end, they finished 5th in state after falling to #4 Burns and #3 Sutherlin.
Coming Back With Avenges …
Sutherlin will be back and ready to win what they feel is rightfully there’s. The 2023 3A State Title! Head Coach Josh Grotting and now Sr. Micah Wicks (27ppg in Coos Bay) has finished 2nd in state three years in a row. Next season, Sutherlin returns EVERYONE and will be ready for another state title run.
15 year drought is over…
Its been 15 years since Nyssa has won a girls basketball state title and this years team was not letting another year go by. Junior Gracie Johnson helped lead Nyssa to the 2022 State title while averaging 15 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocks (13 blocks in the Elite Eight). Congrats to Nyssa!
Boys Side
Never Give Up…
#12 Umatilla finished 4th in the State Tournament with a couple impressive wins against higher seeded teams.. In the Sweet 16, Umatilla drove 255 miles and defeated #5 MVL Champs Santiam Christian to advance to the Elite Eight. In the Elite Eight, they loss by 30 points to eventual champs Cascade Christian. In the consolation bracket, Umatilla went on to defeat #9 Pleasant Hill and got some revenge against league foe #6 Vale to capture the consolation title.
Bigger then Basketball..
Westside Christian Senior Justice Jackson suffered an injury in the second quarter of the Dayton game and did not return to action. Prayers up for Justice and wishing you a healthy recovery. Westside Christian went on to finish 3rd in the State Tournament lead by Sr. Jaymeson Ye, who averaged 19 points in the Elite Eight.
Third Times A Charm…
In the last two season, Cascade Christian was one or two possessions away from being back to back State Champions. This year, Sr. Cody Reese and So. Austin Maurer was not falling short again. Cody averaged 14 points and 6 assists while Austin averaged 24 points, 13 rebounds and 3 blocks. The dynamic duo lead long time Head Coach Brian Morse to his third state title and his first since 2009.
